IATF 16949 Automotive QMS Consultant
Automotive supply-chain manufacturers trust RKM for IATF 16949 consultancy — backed by deep experience working with tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers across Indonesia's automotive sector.
What is IATF 16949?
IATF 16949:2016 is the international quality management system standard for automotive production and relevant service parts organisations. Published by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) — a group of major automotive OEMs and their trade associations — it superseded ISO/TS 16949:2009 and must be used in conjunction with ISO 9001:2015.
IATF 16949 applies to all sites where customer-specified production and/or service parts are manufactured. It is not a standalone standard: it incorporates the full text of ISO 9001:2015 and adds automotive-sector-specific requirements, including product safety, warranty management, embedded software, and the core tools (APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, SPC, AIAG & VDA FMEA).
In Indonesia, IATF 16949 certification is effectively mandatory for tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers to Japanese, Korean, and European automotive OEMs. Customer-specific requirements (CSRs) — such as Toyota's TSI, Honda's SQS, Daihatsu's, and others — add further requirements on top of IATF 16949 itself, requiring consultants with direct familiarity with those CSRs.
Who needs it?
- Tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers to automotive OEMs in Indonesia (Toyota, Honda, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Hino, and others)
- Component manufacturers producing metal pressings, plastic injection mouldings, rubber parts, wiring harnesses, castings, and assemblies
- Service-part manufacturers and remanufacturers
- Organisations currently certified to ISO 9001 seeking automotive supply-chain qualification
- Companies transitioning from expired ISO/TS 16949:2009 certificates to IATF 16949:2016
Benefits of IATF 16949 certification
- OEM supply-chain qualification — IATF 16949 certification is a prerequisite for most automotive OEM supplier qualification processes in Indonesia
- Rigorous defect prevention — APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and SPC requirements build structured defect-prevention into your product development and production processes
- Reduced warranty and field claims — product safety and warranty management requirements drive systematic root-cause analysis and corrective action
- Competitive advantage — certification distinguishes you from uncertified competitors in OEM supplier selection
- Operational discipline — the standard's prescriptive requirements for production controls, calibration, and measurement system analysis improve day-to-day manufacturing consistency
- Foundation for customer audits — a well-maintained IATF 16949 system prepares you for both certification audits and OEM customer-specific audits
Our process — from kickoff to certificate in 4 steps
- Gap Analysis. We assess your current QMS against IATF 16949:2016 and relevant customer-specific requirements, covering all automotive core tools and IATF-specific clauses. We produce a detailed gap report with prioritised remediation actions.
- Documentation. We develop IATF-compliant QMS documentation — quality manual, process maps, SOPs, control plans, and automotive core-tool templates (APQP checklist, PPAP templates, FMEA frameworks, MSA and SPC guidance).
- Implementation & Training. We train your internal audit team to IATF 16949 auditing requirements, support implementation of core-tool processes on the shop floor, and conduct a full internal audit cycle before the certification audit.
- Certification Audit Support. We prepare you for Stage 1 and Stage 2 certification audits with an IATF-recognised certification body. We support corrective-action responses and accompany the audit team where required.
What you'll get

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ISO 9001 required before IATF 16949? IATF 16949 incorporates the full text of ISO 9001:2015. While you do not need a separate ISO 9001 certificate before pursuing IATF 16949, your QMS must meet all ISO 9001:2015 requirements as part of the IATF 16949 certification process.
What are customer-specific requirements (CSRs) and do they affect the certification? CSRs are additional requirements set by individual OEM customers on top of IATF 16949. Each OEM publishes its own CSRs (Toyota's TSI, Honda's, etc.). Certification auditors check applicable CSRs. RKM identifies and integrates all applicable CSRs during the gap analysis phase.
What are the IATF automotive core tools? The five core tools are APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning), PPAP (Production Part Approval Process), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis — now using the AIAG & VDA FMEA methodology), MSA (Measurement System Analysis), and SPC (Statistical Process Control). IATF 16949 requires their application; RKM trains your team and supports implementation.
How long does IATF 16949 certification take? Typically 8–14 months from gap analysis to certificate, depending on the complexity of your products, processes, and the maturity of your existing QMS. Companies with ISO 9001:2015 in place typically complete IATF certification faster.
Which certification bodies are IATF-recognised in Indonesia? Certification under IATF 16949 must be performed by an IATF-recognised certification body. Several operate in Indonesia. RKM can advise on selection based on your customer base and OEM preferences.
What happens if our OEM customer conducts a second-party audit? OEM customer audits assess compliance with IATF 16949 and customer-specific requirements. The system we build is designed to support both third-party certification audits and OEM second-party audits. Many of our clients undergo Toyota or Honda supplier audits after certification.
How often does IATF 16949 certification need to be renewed? IATF 16949 certificates are valid for three years, with mandatory surveillance audits every year (or every six months for high-risk sites). The certification body determines surveillance frequency based on audit results.
